With the weather all week being hot and humid in the high 20`s, it was a bit of a shock to the system when the finalists turned up at Wick Mere on Saturday morning to grey skies and a cool wind blowing into the near bank. Hopes were high for some good catches with fish topping all over the lake. As usual the fish didn’t read the script and it took a while for the first fish to grace the net, with Pasty Power (Paul & Brad) in Match peg 5 and BWB (Lee & Mike) in Match peg 2 in the top two places on the leader board. In particular Mike (BWB) catching a pretty 12lb Mirror Carp.
A quiet evening and still some competitors hadn’t had a bite but, the night time saw a few more fish come out. A PB 32lb 14oz Common to Mitch Branton (MnM) in match peg 6 on the far bank and a 26lb 12oz common to Adam and Callum in match peg 10 (All the gear and no idea) the highlights
Early morning and down in peg 1 The Cannons still had plenty of fish showing in front of them but nothing to show for their efforts, however at approximately 6-30am a very welcome 17lb 1oz Common graced the net and they were up and running.
Unfortunately Paul Bocking (DT Baits) received news that there could be an oxygen problem with the Willows fishery. He and his partner Kris had to pack up and head over there to deal with the issue, therefore regrettably pulling out of the match, although not registering a fish they did lose a couple to the dreaded thick weed in front of them .
Meanwhile back at the match a decent fish by anyone could put themselves in contention for a top 3 finish and although Pasty Power in front with 3 fish, first place could still be snatched. In the last couple of hours The Cannons pulled one out the hat with a 25lb 1oz Common to take 2nd place.
In the end Pasty Power won the match with 3 fish and reclaimed the title they won in 2013

I would like to thank all the Marshals who helped out this weekend Spencer, Paul and rookie Owen another fine job done by you all. Thanks to Lee for running the event, all went nice and smoothly. Also thanks to all those who helped clear vast quantities of weed last weekend so that the anglers had clear spots to fish, not a pleasant job by all accounts.
A big Thank you to our sponsors DT Baits and Specimen Angling (who arranged all the prizes) and to the companies who gave them. We raised £220 on the raffle alone today. Please don’t forget the trophies will be handed out at the Charity talk night with Joe Turnball and Adam Penning on Thursday 27th October 2016 at Hatfield Peverel Village Hall at 7pm.
I hope all those who took part in the Adult Qualifiers and Junior Carp Matches enjoyed themselves and if you didn’t win hopefully try again next year. Once again a big thank you to all those involved in organising and running the events, it is a big task and it is appreciated all the hard work that goes into it.
Hope to see as many of you on the 27th October
